The Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment, the Dirty Half-Hundred (the 50th/97th Regiment of Foot)
Published in Unknown Binding by Leo Cooper ()
Author: Roger Holloway
Average review score:

another forgotten british regiment
clearly the author did not serve with the regiment about which he writes - the "dirty half hundred".
this book forms part of the series of books that includes the tranche of regiments that died in the years of retreat from the british empire.

however, the author manages - despite his lack interviewees that even fairly latterly served with this regiment - to convey a sense of the historical context of the men that died serving within it.

if those men could read this book they would understand their historical context and even the "why". though one imagines these things may continue to mystify those widows and children that remain.

a fairly unusal book for that.

Ready, Set, Go! A Student Guide for SPSS® 7.5 for Windows®

Authors: Thomas W. Pavkov and Kent A. Pierce

A pratical, hands-on approach to teaching statistics.
This book provides an excellent step-by-step approach to learning how to use SPSS to conduct statistical analyses. The book begins with a description of the Basics of SPSS: opening the program, opening files, printing, saving, etc. The authors then cover, through examples, the running of descriptive stastics, graphing, and inferential statistics, including t tests, one-way ANOVA, correlation, regression, and Chi-square. The book is filled with illustrations which the authors have designed utilizing the data sets that come with the SPSS package. The authors not only cover the procedures for running the statistical tests in SPSS, but they also discuss the research questions that may be addressed with each statistic, i.e. the "When?" and "Why?" questions

An excellent resource for the Statistically Challenged
I was completing my dissertation in Clinical Psychology when I hit the wall. I am not fluent in the language of statistics and SPSS was much too complicated for me to understand immediately. I acquired this book from a friend and I can't tell you how much this book saved my life! It explained not only how to use the program in very easy steps, it explained WHY and HOW to pick your statistical procedures in language that was simple. Reading through the book and looking at the examples helped me understand how to pick the appropriate statistical procedures (and why), how to enter the data, how to pull down the appropriate tests, and how to look at the data calculations and make conclusions. THere are no wasted pages in this book (88 pages) and I swear it helped me get through my dissertation on my own (which I passed!). Don't hesitate to buy this book if you are working on your psychology or social science thesis or dissertation. It's a fantastic resource!

The Real Tom Brown's School Days
Published in Paperback by GLB Publishers (02 November, 2002)
Author: Chris Kent
Average review score:

Chris Kent Does It Again
Frankly, I am amazed that Chris Kent gets away with it but I'm glad he does. In the real Tom Brown's School Days, Kent has taken a timeless, classic English novel, which is frankly second-rate twaddle, and has reworked it into a page-turning experience that leaves you as breathless as most of the boys who appear in the book. Some readers will be put off and other turned on by the o-so-graphic sex, but there's far more to the book than sexual titillation - it's tale that manages to be poignant, moving, realistic, fantastical, incredible, unbelievable, and hugely entertaining. If the full-in-your-face sex is repreentative of life in English boarding schools then and now, I for one am sorry I went to a state day school! All I can say is that Chris Kent devotees will love Tom Brown, and new-comers to his work will be converted or disgusted in equal methods.
Hurrah for Tom Brown!
Hurrah for Chris Kent!

Red River Crossing by Kent Conwell
If you have never read one of Kent Conwell's books, you are missing a lot. And this one only proves that he gets better and better. I enjoyed reading this. Mr. Conwell not only makes believable characters but he instills humor, action and emotion in his works. When I read the part about the boil, I could picture the whole event the way he expressed it on paper. He is an excellent writer. Of all his books that I have read, I have enjoyed every single one of them. Red River Crossing was no exception. A five stars, and a two thumbs upward. This book is wonderfully written and fantastic!

Running a Successful Franchise

Things You May Not Have Thought Of

Are you considering buying a franchise or expanding one? You owe yourself, at least, a little research. "Running a Successful Franchise" is more than a little. It is as close to a single reference as I have seen. You will crave a copy for your bookshelf, and you'll need it for reference before and during your own experience.

It defines terms while avoiding jargon. While it describes the whole process of running a franchise, it avoids the hype, so common in the press, that this lifestyle is for everybody and EVEN FOR YOU! What you will find here are lists of things to watch out for.

It includes a short description of psychological profiles and how they are used by franchisors to screen prospective operators. This book covers a wide range of material from sketches of legal requirements and advice on selecting attorneys and accountants to recommendations about how to treat employees. If you can overlook split infinitives and the occasional typo, you will agree that this book provides access to a huge and complex body of knowledge. Odds are that you, like me, are not world-class authorities in this area. Most people entering franchising aren't, either. Thankfully, experts like Shivell and Banning are willing and able to point the way.
